Honda is the world's largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines by volume, and has been the most proficient manufacturer of motorcycles in the world since 1959. With this level of popularity, as well as the affordability of their vehicles across the board, it's no surprise that so many of us are heading down to the Honda dealership, but before you do, get up to scratch on the history of the Japanese company in our latest blog!
Soichiro Honda and the early years
Having had an interest in automobiles from an early age growing up in Japan, Soichiro Honda started his first company, Tokai Seiki, in 1937 to produce piston rings for Toyota. However, as World War II came to the shores of Japan, Soichiro’s factory was destroyed, and he was forced to sell what was left of his initial company to Toyota, getting ¥450,000 to put toward his next venture.
Soichiro established the Honda Technical Research Institute in 1946 to create prototypes for small motorcycle engines, and after gaining the capacity to build them, he started a second company - the Honda Motor Company. The demand for Japanese-made motorcycles was high, bringing Honda a great deal of success, to the point where just over 10 years later in 1959 they were able to open a store in Los Angeles.
International popularity and the Honda Civic
In the 1960s, Honda moved into manufacturing cars, first in 1962 launching the S500 sports car and T360 light truck, and in 1967 the N360 minicar. These were all incredibly popular vehicles, allowing Honda to begin production abroad in Taiwan and hold steady as the top car seller in Japan for three years.
Honda’s success only grew with the release of the Civic in 1972. This would prove to be Honda’s most popular vehicle of all time, with more than 10 generations produced since. The Civic’s popularity allowed Honda to further expand manufacturing into Indonesia and the US, and in 1986 to launch their luxury brand Acura. In doing so, Honda became the first Japanese automobile manufacturer to release a range of luxury cars.
Honda cars today
With a yearly revenue of almost ¥12 trillion and over 200,000 employees worldwide, Honda is nothing less than a giant in the automotive industry. As well as manufacturing vehicles and motorcycles, and parts and engines for both, they also manufacture a range of other electrical equipment, and are starting to look to the future in terms of implementing AI into their manufacturing technology.
