How often do you service your used vehicle?

Between all the new and used vehicles on the road, thousands of cars get serviced every day around the country. While most of us seem to be relatively on top of things when it comes to servicing, it’s important to make sure everyone knows how crucial regular servicing is, how often they should get it done, and why it’s even more important if you’re driving a used car. In this blog post we’ll go over the answers to these questions, to make sure that everyone’s on the same page when it comes to car servicing.

How often are Australians servicing their cars?

According to a survey of Australians in 2018, 57 percent of Australians are getting their cars serviced every six months, with 35 percent getting annual services. The survey also revealed the reasons why people are getting their vehicles serviced so often – most car owners are simply motivated by making sure that their car is as safe as possible, while others with newer cars are getting regular servicing in order to meet the conditions of their warranty.  This is very important.   If you don’t get your car serviced as specified you could void your new car warranty.

How often should you service a car?

Every vehicle will have a service interval specified by the manufacturer.   This is either every six months and 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres or these days every 12 months. It’s important that car owners take a look at their car’s manual, in which there’s normally a section that lists the recommended service intervals for the car and which service operations should be carried out. Even easier, many modern cars feature a dashboard light that will flash as a reminder to get a service when it’s required!

If your car isn’t serviced on time, you may face problems such as reduced fuel economy, deterioration of your car’s cleaning oil when not replaced, and increased wear on your engine, all potentially leading to major mechanical failure. Brake fluid also needs to be checked and replaced regularly, in order to make sure that your car’s brakes are in top working condition.

Why is servicing so important for used cars?

If you’ve bought and are driving a cheap used car, servicing is crucially important: this is largely due to the age of most used cars, and the wear and tear that many of them have seen over the course of their time on the road. Used cars will definitely need to be serviced at the intervals specified by the manufacturer, and if they have a history of being driven in adverse conditions – off-road, stopping and starting constantly in the city, or towing a heavy load – these services may need to occur more frequently.
